News or Noise

Join us as we examine a news story making the rounds from publicly available sources, and ask, “Is it News or Noise”? Our goal is to approach each topic from an independent, investor-first, standpoint, divorce ourselves from personal feelings, emotional bias, or political opinion, and briefly analyze what we believe each story means for long-term investors.

In this episode of "News or Noise" with Chris Perras, Chief Investment Officer at Oak Harvest Financial Group, we revisit a critical topic that has been shaping the financial landscape over the past year: the Federal Reserve's Balance Sheet and its ongoing operating losses. If you're an investor, this is information you can't afford to miss.
Exactly one year ago, we delved into this issue, expressing concerns about the Federal Reserve's balance sheet and the potential consequences of rising interest rates in 2022. Little did we know that the financial landscape would continue to evolve with events like the Silicon Valley Bank implosion, regional bank runs, and an additional $2 trillion deficit in 2023.
In this episode, we discuss the Federal Reserve's balance sheet, its continuing operating losses, and unrealized mark-to-market losses, which have likely surpassed $1 trillion and are still mounting. These developments will have a profound impact on your investments, shaping decisions made by both the Federal Reserve and the Treasury in the coming quarters, years, and even decades.
Don't miss out on this vital information that can impact your financial future. Watch the full video, and be sure to read Avi Gilbert's analysis for a comprehensive understanding of the Federal Reserve's balance sheet woes.

Many investors who follow the markets love to discuss economic theory and the virtually nonstop government data releases. I'm here to tell you you're wasting your time. The vast majority of these topics, discussions, and data, while intellectually interesting, will not improve your investment returns. 99. %+ of the data that is released is a complete waste of your time and energy. It's noise.

In 2022, near the height of the network news swirl on inflation fears, the OHFG investment team put out a piece of research trying to dispel the notion that inflation would remain at 7-8% for very long. That history said that the odds were high that inflation would peak and drop quickly, albeit not to 2%.
Front page stories about inflation are news for your investments, for you and your family because it does drive investor sentiment and Fed actions. With that said, these stories about inflation, overall, are improving and should be helpful, not hurtful to your portfolios.

New or Noise is a vlog/podcast that looks at current topics and helps you decide if they are newsworthy for your investments. Should you be concerned? Or, should you tune out the noise and not worry? These are going to be quick, casual, opinion pieces, and while we will use data to support our view, we will most likely be wrong in our interpretations, at least some of the time. However, we are looking to practice what we preach, and to help investors to rationally and critically analyze emotion-laden stories.

February Made me Shiver!

Wednesday Mar 08, 2023

Wednesday Mar 08, 2023

After having the best month in stocks since 2020 in January, which triggered a "golden cross" on the S&P500 on February 2nd, the rest of February saw a broad-based decline across equity and bond markets. The market's pullback started pre-open on Friday, February 3rd, with a BLS jobs report far better than any economic bull could have imagined. Based on market seasonals, it shouldn't come as a big surprise that equities struggled in February after a strong January.

Politically Incorrect Investing

Wednesday Feb 08, 2023

Over the last three months, most of our country's largest and best-known technology companies have announced layoffs. Most management teams cite fears of a recession in 2023 as the reason for these cutbacks. Clearly, job cuts are bad for employees and workers who lose their jobs. I've been in that group a couple of times in my career. It is horribly anxiety-provoking, and I wish it on no one. However, are announced job cuts sometimes good news for investors?
