News or Noise

Join us as we examine a news story making the rounds from publicly available sources, and ask, “Is it News or Noise”? Our goal is to approach each topic from an independent, investor-first, standpoint, divorce ourselves from personal feelings, emotional bias, or political opinion, and briefly analyze what we believe each story means for long-term investors.

Last week, the Federal Reserve announced they were raising the short-term interest rate they control by 75 basis points. This announcement is just one month after Chairman Jerome Powell said the Central bank was not actively considering raising interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point to fight inflation.
Many TV analysts expressed alarm at the size of this move stating this is the "First time since 1994" that the Fed has made such a move. Bringing up a date almost 30 years ago, as if it was so long ago, it must have been bad for markets.
As you know, our constant advice for investors is to “tune out the noise.” But sometimes it is hard to know what’s noise and what’s not! That’s what this series is going to be about. Our goal here is to approach these stories and each topic from an independent, investor-first, standpoint, divorce ourselves from personal feelings, emotional bias, or political opinion, and briefly analyze what we believe each story means for long-term investors.
These are going to be quick, casual, opinion pieces, and while we will use data to support our view, we will most likely be wrong in our interpretations, at least some of the time. However, we are looking to practice what we preach, and to help investors to rationally and critically analyze emotion-laden stories. So with that said… News or Noise?

Do dividends matter in your portfolio? The public's interest in dividend investing and, more specifically, "dividend growth" investing seems to wax and wane every couple of years, depending on the economy and sentiment. Just 6 to 9 months ago, few in the press were discussing this group of stocks with enthusiasm, while many were extolling the virtues of growth at any price stocks or valuing stocks on "TAM," which is an acronym for "Total addressable market."
As you know, our constant advice for investors is to “tune out the noise.” But sometimes it is hard to know what’s noise and what’s not! That’s what this series is going to be about. In the span of 2 weeks, a few well-known billionaires have done a lot of flip-flopping on TV. One well know banker went from publicly guiding up his bank's 2nd half outlook on May 23rd, saying the economy was strong, to telling investors on June 1st, to batten down the hatches; the economy may be facing an economic hurricane.
As you know, our constant advice for investors is to “tune out the noise.” But sometimes it is hard to know what’s noise and what’s not! That’s what this series is going to be about.

For retirement prospects, TV and internet commercials are everywhere. They never seem to disappear whether it's good times or bad. However, in times like this, when inflation is high, when stock market volatility is high, when global conditions are more uncertain than normal, and when there is doubt in the world and our economy, they explode in numbers and alarmism. What am I talking about? I am talking about the number of commercials pitching Gold as the ultimate inflation hedge. Click here for more!

Mid last week the S&P500 booted the number one electric vehicle maker in the world, Tesla, off its ESG Index as part of its annual reconstitution. Yes, you heard that right. They deemed While we do not specifically screen for ESG parameters in our investment process at Oak Harvest, we do follow what is going on in that arena. Theoretically, ESG screening considers highly qualitative factors such as environmental, social, and governance policies of companies. Firms like Morningstar and S&P Global try to quantify these 3 factors into a “data” set, throw that data into an equation in an excel spreadsheet, and rank corporations on a sliding scale.
